One Killed in Shooting Near Atlas Road

One person was killed in an overnight shooting in East Columbia Thursday. 

Jarrett D. Jackson, 21, of Columbia, died from a gunshot wound to the head after a shooting around 12:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Springway Drive near Atlas Road, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said.

Investigators with the Columbia Police Department say the shooting happened when a group of suspects attempted to commit a crime at a home on Springway Drive, according to a release.

"There was an exchange of gunfire and at least three people were shot — one fatally and one being a possible suspect," Columbia Police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said in the release.

The injuries of the other two people who were shot do not appear to be life threatening. 

Columbia Police continue to investigate.
