Bachmann Stresses Conservative Background in Lexington Stop

The Minnesota congresswoman draws a crowd of more than 200 at her third stop in South Carolina.

LEXINGTON -- Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachman drew a crowd of more than 200 at the Flight Deck restaurant in Lexington Wednesday.

Bachman stressed conservative values, reminding the crowd of her Tea Party background. She also emphasized her family's military background and promised to defend the United States.

The U.S. needs a president who is fiscally conservative, Bachmann said.

"We can't afford four more years of an unconstitutional government takeover of healthcare," she said, referring to Barack Obama's healthcare bill.

Lucy Sweatt has lived in St. Andrews for 44 years but on Wednesday she made the drive to Lexington to hear Bachmann speak. She wasn't sure who she was going to vote for in the next election before hearing Bachmann speak.

"I surely like what she said," Sweatt said. "She's the kind of person we need -- a good Christian. It's time we let the women in the White House."

Bachmann just announced her official entry into the presidential race on Monday, and on Tuesday she started her tour of South Carolina in Myrtle Beach. Bachmann plans to make her final stops in Greenville and Rock Hill on Wednesday and Thursday.

The crowd in Lexington chanted with Bachmann, agreeing to make Barack Obama a "one-term president."

She made it clear that she didn't agree with Obama's handling of healthcare, the national debt, Israel or abortion, but she didn't go into much detail on those issues.

Bachmann's campaign bus pulled into the parking lot of the Flight Deck restaurant around 12:45. She didn't use a teleprompter for her speech.

"I just want you to know that in the White House, there will be no teleprompters," she said. "I believe the people of the United States can handle the unvarnished truth."
