Dems Demand Nikki Haley Condemn SCGOP For Calling IRS "Obama's Gestapo"

The SCGOP said the goal of the email's subject line was to highlight the IRS's questionable tactics.

South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Jaime Harrison is demanding that Gov. Nikki Haley apologize after the South Carolina Republican Party referred to the IRS as "Obama's Gestapo" in a fundraising letter.

“As the leader of her party, Governor Haley should condemn these hateful remarks. And as Chairman of the SCGOP, Matt Moore should apologize to the people of South Carolina and donate any money raised from this email to charity," Harrison said.

"The State Party sent out a fundraising email earlier with a subject line meant to grab the attention of those receiving it. If anyone was upset, we certainly regret it. Our goal was to highlight the IRS's questionable tactics and their decision to selectively scrutinize and target certain groups, including those in South Carolina," said Alex Stroman, Executive Director of the SCGOP told Patch via email.

It's not the first time the issue of white supremacy has been attached to Haley — and she's been on both sides of the accusations.

Last September, during the Democratic convention, then SCDP Chairman Dick Harpootlian referred to Haley as "Eva Braun" when she held a press conference in the basement of a Charlotte building where she blasted Obama's economic record. Braun was with Hitler in a Berlin Bunker when they committed suicide together as WW II drew to a close.

Tuesday afternoon, Haley told The State, “There is no place in politics for any comments like that,” she said. “I didn’t think so when they were done to me, I don’t think so now.”

Earlier this year, a volunteer for Haley was linked to a white supremacist group and was eventually asked to resign.

"Just two months ago, Haley spent three days defending a white supremacist that she appointed co-chair of her campaign and now her party is equating its political opponents to the Nazi police that oversaw the imprisonment and mass-murder of millions of innocent people," Harrison said in a statement. "It's a disgusting display that proves Nikki Haley truly knows no bounds when it comes to hypocrisy and has no standards for decency and standing up for rights."

CORRECTION: The story has been corrected to reflect the SCGOP's role in the fundraising letter.
