Gay Couple Challenges SC Gay Marriage Ban

Couple is the first to challenge the state's constitutional ban, which was passed by voters in 2006.

A gay couple has sued Gov. Nikki Haley and Attorney General Alan Wilson in federal district court in Columbia over the state's gay marriage ban, the Charleston City Paper reported.

Katherine Bradacs and Tracie Goodwin of Lexington County are reportedly the first gay couple in South Carolina to challenge the state's constitutional ban, which was passed by voters in 2006. Bradacs is a SC Highway Patrol trooper, a state employee, and the suit argues many benefits are being denied to her spouse under the existing law.

U.S. Supreme Court in June struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act.
