Rep. Trey Gowdy

A look at the Republican representing the 4th Congressional District

Republican Trey Gowdy was elected to represent South Carolina’s 4th Congressional District in 2010. He was part of the first wave of “Tea Party” candidates to win federal office.

The 4th covers most of Greenville and Spartanburg Counties and prior to Gowdy’s election, it was served the previous 18 years by either Jim DeMint or Bob Ingles. In the Republican primary in June 2010, Gowdy defeated Ingles.

Gowdy’s full name is Harold Watson Gowdy III. He is a 1982 graduate of Spartanburg High School, Baylor University and the University of South Carolina School of Law. After serving as a law clerk, Gowdy went into private practice before he became a federal prosecutor in 1994. In 2000, Gowdy was elected the Solicitor of the 7th Circuit. He was re-elected with ease in 2004 and 2008.

Since arriving in the House, Gowdy has quickly established himself as one of the most conservative members in the entire body. Gowdy achieved national prominence in the summer of 2011 when he and several other freshman congressman refused to lower their demands during the debt ceiling fight. Gowdy returned to the spotlight in 2012 as one of the lead questioners in the House Oversight Committee’s investigation of the Fast and Furious scandal.
