Romney Picks Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan As VP

How do you think the pick will affect the November election vs. President Barack Obama.

Soon-to-be Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has announced his choice for vice president.

It's Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan.

Romney, who has an event planned for Saturday morning on the USS Wisconsin in Virginia, chose Ryan over several other high-profile Republicans, including , and Ohio Sen. Rob Portman.

When Patch asked influential consveratives in South Carolina three weeks ago about their hopes for VP, .

Here is the press release from the Romney campaign:

Boston, MA – Mitt Romney today announced Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan as his Vice Presidential running mate. Below is Congressman Ryan’s biography:

U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan is in his seventh term in Congress representing Wisconsin’s First Congressional District.  He is Chairman of the House Budget Committee, where he has worked tirelessly leading the effort to reign in federal spending and increase accountability to taxpayers. He also serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, where he has focused on simplifying the tax code and making health care more affordable and accessible.

In January 2010, Ryan gained attention nationwide after unveiling his “Roadmap for America’s Future,” a proposal to eliminate the federal deficit, reform the tax code, and preserve entitlements for future generations.

Representative Ryan was born in Janesville, Wisconsin on January 29, 1970. A fifth-generation Wisconsin native, Ryan was the youngest of four children born to Paul Ryan Sr., who worked as an attorney, and Betty, a stay-at-home mom.

In April 2000, Ryan proposed to Janna Little, a native Oklahoman, at one of his favorite fishing spots, Big St. Germain Lake in Wisconsin. Later that year, the two were married in Oklahoma City.

The Ryans reside in Janesville with their three children, Liza, Charlie and Sam. The family are parishioners at St. John Vianney Catholic Church.

Upon entering Congress in January of 1999, Ryan was the youngest member of the freshmen class at the age of 28. Prior to running for Congress, Ryan served as an aide to Republican Senators Robert Kasten Jr. and Sam Brownback, former U.S. Rep. and Vice Presidential Candidate Jack Kemp, and as a speechwriter for Education Secretary William Bennett.

Ryan is a graduate of Joseph A. Craig High School in Janesville and earned degrees in economics and political science from Miami University in Ohio.  He is an avid outdoorsman and is a member is of his local archery association, the Janesville Bowmen.

@Gretchen: '...if you go fishing... pick up the garbage the DEMS leave behind. haha
the DEMs have picked up the garbage the GOPs left behind after 1929 and 2008...and GOPs want to repeat policies that produced the 1929/2008 garbage... re: "what has Obama done that is so good"...[G] as repeated ad nauseam...google BO accomplishments...quick summary: 1. 2008 losing jobs, trending down v 2012 gaining jobs, trending up... 2. DJI 2008 at around 7000 v 2012 at around 12,000. hahaha
Dr. John August 13, 2012 at 01:27 am
So Stanley,
You agree that your opinion is to blame the GOP? Do you care to comment on my "state of soc. security or Medicare stability" comment and who is to blame for that problem. More importantly, do you care to comment on the best plan to fix it? As to your Milton F. Comments... The two parties he discusses are not political parties but two individual parties. His point is demonstrated by this example . Let's say I have $3 and I want to buy a gallon of milk. A supermarket manager has a gallon of milk wishes to sell it for $3. If we both agree to the transaction then both parties benefit. This satisfies the goals of each party. I can tell you did not really listen to the series, only look for possible talking points. Milton was a brilliant man yet simple in his premises.
DA August 13, 2012 at 12:25 pm
No, reg, you are wrong. Obama has already robbed the taxpayers by taking billions out of Medicare to fund his Obamacare. That is a fact. It is now law. Every single poll shows the majority of voting American taxpayers do not want Obamacare!
DA August 13, 2012 at 12:39 pm
Gretchen, you took the words right out of my mouth! These BIG liberal dems just make me shake my head in disbelief with what they say . . . and think they are so smart. Sort of like their "leader" Obama. I am so looking forward to his concession speech on November 6th. It can't happen soon enough.
Sami August 13, 2012 at 12:51 pm
@reg
no....lol, no salesman! Just an American citizen voicing (littering) my rights. Contrary to Dem's beliefs, they are not the only ones with that right.
Richard Hayes August 13, 2012 at 01:31 pm
Ryan is a Tea Party darling with a plan to end Medicare as we know it, cut Pell Grant scholarships for 10 million students, andcut services to our veterans all so he can give yet another tax break to millionaires and billionaires.
Gretchen August 13, 2012 at 02:02 pm
Richard ... that is a bunch of GARBAGE. The GOP tries to help the veterans a lot more than the DEMS. Medicare is going BROKE ...something has to be done to FIX IT. You have your head in the sand. The country has gone down hill since Obama was elected. When BUSH left office, unemployment was 4.7%, gas cost $2.26 a gallon and 17 million Americans were on food stamps. Almost 4 years later under Obama, unemployment is at a record 8.3%, gas costs $4.00 a gallon and 43 million Americans are on food stamps. WE HAVE TO STOP THE SPENDING ! ! PERIOD ! ! !

@Dr. John: '...You agree that your opinion is to blame the GOP?...'
my opine is my opine, nothing more...it's not to blame but, by FYI-ing...to seek/determine the truth... i thought by agreeing w/ you we could move on to the real issues (stanley is NOT the issue)...why do you continue to beg the questions and make me the issue...address the facts not stanley. i agree to any of yo opines relative to me...so that we can move on and discuss real issues and facts. re: Do you care to comment on my "state of soc. security or Medicare stability" sorry not sure just what your position is on SS and medicare...if you want to restate, i will offer my opine and facts as i see them. re: Milton F. Comments MF was discussing, opining on, free market bs not individuals...your incorrect opine limits his philosophy to individuals...by making it an individual issue you diminish MF...surely this is not your intent.

Gretchen . . . don't confuse liberal Dems like Richard and others with THE FACTS. It's hopeless. Time for the grown-ups to take back the White House. You are so right . . . we now have well over 8% unemployment (considerably higher than when GWBush left office) and trillions more in debt than back then. Foreclosure rate out of the roof, staggering gas and food prices, etc. etc. not to even mention the costs we taxpayers will incur with Obamacare if it isn't repealed. And the Dems are comfortable with this. They will vote for MORE OF THE SAME INSANITY "LED" BY THEIR MESSIAH OBAMA. WHAT A JOKE!!
reg August 13, 2012 at 03:43 pm
You're providing troll tidbits, DuiA - the only "billions out of Medicare" are the billions in fraud and abuse that cost the program so much; ACA has measures to block that fraud and abuse, which is the amount you trolls keep coming up with. Ryan's budget bill specifies REMOVAL of the abuse watch program, though. As for "every single poll....." - PUT UP OR SHUT UP. A majority of the population favors the program. Go back to your insurance company desk and crank out more insurance company press releases, DuiA

quite true, spami - here in America, even bold-faced liars (dumb enough to attempt posting data that anyone with half a brain can quickly disprove) like yourself are free to post comments. Doing it for a professional trade, though - like you're apparently doing - is denying this publication the costs of advertisement they'd ordinarily charge you, though.
reg August 13, 2012 at 04:03 pm
um, cretin, how has the GOP tried to help veterans? In the Ryan budget, $11 billion in vets benefits get chopped.
And now you're using made-up figures? Like you think no one knows how to check? *How desperate can you be?* Unemployment when Bush left office: 7.8 Gas costs when Bush left office - $2.63 (following an all-time high of $4.12 under his term, and gas was only $1.86 when he came in....) - Food Stamps when Bush left office 31.7 million (a 14.7 million increase between 2004 and 2008, which is an all-time record of new recipients in a single term); also, a surge in Food Stamp participation comes from the new Disaster SNAP format - Alabama alone had a 30+% increase in 2011. You people need to stop just typing away from the troll books you were given, and maybe should try to verify those claims to keep from embarrassing yourselves over and over again.
reg August 13, 2012 at 04:09 pm
You have no facts, DuiA - none. You're typing up made-up figures from some troll book. I've already disproven the other garbage that you and cretin are spewing up on this page, and now for your latest of costs we are supposed to incur under ACA. Let's see, are you one of the tens of millions who received a refund from your insurance company this year, since ACA now makes those companies do that to keep them from robbing you blind? Are you hoping we don't know that insurance costs for households making less than $88K/year are now decreased? Are you one of those GopOONS who thinks we don't know how you're twisting the national debt figures, actually adding in our positive assets in reserve we already have to that debt figure? ("Well, let's see....we'll have to spend that money someday, right? so let's tell dumb folks that it's DEBT! Yeah! They'll fall for it!!") Go back to china or north korea, you plutocratic communist.
reg August 13, 2012 at 04:14 pm
What the Ryan Bill does to Medicare - It would not cover the full cost of premiums, meaning seniors would have to pay additional upfront; it raises the ages of eligibility for retirees, meaning many will have to sit 2 years without any medical insurance; it eliminates dual eligibility, meaning low-income/low asset seniors would not be able to also receive Medicaid when needed; its declared rates of COLA are below the actual projected increases, meaning it will cost seniors more every year to receive medical care; it eliminates the programs that were recently instituted to stop Medicare fraud and abuse; and its projected to increase national debt by $230 billion over 10 years.
DA August 13, 2012 at 04:19 pm

If I do not understand Milton F then why don't you explain the concept do self interest as talked about in his video series. Milton never framed things in political parties with his theories only individual parties both persuing their own self interst.
Robert Kelly August 13, 2012 at 05:54 pm
According to a news roundtable this past weekend, comprising a mixed (con and lib) group, there was general agreement that polls indicate dissatisfaction with the ACA, but when asked about the individual parts of the ACA, they approved. Apparently people want what is in it, but they don't think they want it. Sounds like confusion.

@Dr. John: '...Milton never framed things in political parties ...'
you are more familiar w/ MF than i...do agree he talked of 'parties'...not specifically to political parties...parties as in societies...not as you imply to the individual... as said you more familiar w/MF so any info that singular vice plural appreciated... BTW MF's free market, works well when everybody is motivated by the common good...and no one is motivated by greed...nirvana/heaven... MF never advocated today's GOP, rip off, free market...he didn't envision people making money ripping other people off...and a unregulated wall street gaming the system...eg; packaging sub prime mortgages and selling them as AAA bonds...banks using their depositors' money to buy these worthless AAA bonds... re: explain the concept do self interest as talked about in his video series. how does your understanding MF relate to my explaining MF's self interest opines...i really don't know what are asking or how it relates to this discussion...seems like another distraction...actually; not sure how any of our discussion relates to, 'How do you think the pick [PR] will affect the November election vs. President Barrack Obama.'
Dr. John August 14, 2012 at 04:10 am
Stanley,
You are the one that suggested that I did not understand Milton F. I simply wanted you to explain how you thought your interpretation was more accurate. I brought up the concept as it related to Solyndra, which was discussed earlier. I explained the concept of free markets and how when anybody in a free market follows their "self interest" and obeys the law, they are improving the lives of others as an indirect result. My comments regarding Medicare and SS are also posted earlier and discuss the grim reality that our current trajectory will necessitate the end of these programs, or the end of any other major spending program such as education and defense just to keep our promises to the elderly. Medicare and SS will bankrupt this country in less than 20 years, Paul Ryan has a bold proposal to address this problem. Yet we attack him as if he created the problem. What are the Dem solutions to this problem? There is not enough revenue in the "top 1%" to confiscate to fund it. There is not enough revenue to fund it if you were to confiscate 50% of all the wealth of every working citizen at the rate it is costing us. What is your bold solution Stanley, besides the tired blame game you play....
Gretchen August 14, 2012 at 01:49 pm
I wonder how many of the OBAMA SUPPORTERS here have heard Erskine Bowles, Obama's Deficit Commission Co-Chairman, talking about Paul Ryan. He says he is the brightest young man he knows, and that he has great ideas. Bowles is also upset that Obama did not listen to the Commission he appointed.
Fisher August 14, 2012 at 03:17 pm
Say what you will, Obama will likely win. The electoral math is on his side.
Romney HAS to win everything McCain won last time (pretty easy), but he also HAS to win North Carolina, Virginia and Indiana. Romney is doing OK in North Carolina and Indiana, but not so much in Virginia. He can't just win two; he has to win all three. If he can't, the game is over. And if he pulls that off, he's also got to win in Ohio and Florida. Obama is winning in both and Ryan doesn't help Romney in Florida at all. In fact, most people seem to think Florida is a write off now that Ryan is on the ticket. Again, he can't win one or the other, he's got to win both. So if he pulls off that Herculean task (very doubtful) he then needs to win one of eight states Obama won in 2008. That might be easier, but he's behind in 5 of those states. FOX News outlines the challenge ahead (though they don't make it sound difficult) in this video: http://video.foxnews.com/v/1652924414001/ Obama, however, just needs to win Michigan, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania (on top of all the states in which he already has a decisive lead). He's already ahead in all those states. It's a seriously titled electoral map that Ryan does not help. Sorry guys. Romney is about to spend $2 billion on a race he can't possibly win.
stanley seigler August 14, 2012 at 11:52 pm
@Dr. John
continuing the tittat, yousay/hesay discussion, re 'stanley blaming' and 'MF's opine' is a counter productive waste...and; so that we can address relevant issues: i agree with whatever you said/say on this irrelevance...moving on: MEDICARE the first step to change the medicare trajectory was/is BO-care (ACA)...the next step is universal health care (single payer plan)...which BTW; [CLIP] 'other advanced, Western countries [all with universal care] enjoy better outcomes even though they pay a third less.' http://www.usnews.com/opinion/blogs/economic-intelligence/2012/07/12/bickering-over-affordable-care-act-gets-us-nowhere SOCIAL SECURITY if T-GOPs would make their JOB#1 fixing SS vice making BO a one 'termer'...there are numerous simple fixes that could be enacted...eg; [CLIP] '...easy way to ensure the program’s long-term solvency without large changes or cuts to benefits. Payroll taxes that finance Social Security are capped...Eliminating that cap would allow Social Security to pay full benefits for the next 75 years, according to a Congressional Research Service report. RYAN's BOLD PROPASAL what are details of his bold proposal.. GENERAL the 'grim reality' is T-GOPs want to return to those thrilling days of 1929 and 2008...the 'grim reality' is their priorities are to beat BO and win elections...and NOT the common good and general welfare of our country...
