Sen. Jim DeMint Slams Boehner Fiscal Cliff Offer As 'Tax Hike'

Calls for an extension of current tax rates and decrease in spending.

In a statement released Tuesday morning, Sen. Jim DeMint slammed the latest offer by House Speaker John Boehner in the fiscal cliff negotiations.

Some observers have noted that discussions over the fiscal cliff are drawing out a post-election divide among Republicans. In one group are more moderate Republicans, such as Boehner, willing to compromise and meet Democrats for the sake of a deal. In another group, is DeMint and the rest of the South Carolina congressional delegation who are encouraging the GOP to stand its ground on core principles such as tax cuts and spending.

On Sunday, Sen. Lindsey Graham called President Obama's fiscal proposal "a joke."

Here is DeMint's full statement:

"Speaker Boehner's $800 billion tax hike will destroy American jobs and allow politicians in Washington to spend even more, while not reducing our $16 trillion debt by a single penny,” said Senator DeMint. “This isn't rocket science. Everyone knows that when you take money out of the economy, it destroys jobs, and everyone knows that when you give politicians more money, they spend it. This is why Republicans must oppose tax increases and insist on real spending reductions that shrink the size of government and allow Americans to keep more of their hard-earned money.

“Big government is the cause of our debt crisis, not the solution. Washington has a spending addiction that is shackling our children and grandchildren with unsustainable debt. Conservatives fought for a balanced budget amendment last year precisely because we knew the political establishment in Washington would never stop their tax and spend addiction without it. However, if neither party leadership is going to put forward a serious plan to balance the budget and pay down the debt, we should end this charade. We can stop the fiscal cliff with the bill that House Republicans already passed that simply extends the current tax rates and replaces the defense cuts with reductions in wasteful spending.”

"This isn't rocket science."
Clearly. Science requires relying on results and facts. GOP economic policy relies on ancient beliefs and mantras.

Only the stupid and irresponsible spend more when they are deeply in debt.

Yeah, entrepreneurship is for morons. Thanks for proving my point about mantras. Keep blindly following them, I'm sure your United States of Walmart overlords will be benevolent.

Let's get over the lie that the 2% are the job creators and taxing them will kill jobs. Stashing millions of dollars in foreign banks to avoid taxation does not create jobs. People spending money actually creates more jobs because it circulates money and creates demand for products and services. Middle class people spend more of their money, frequently all of their money.
Tax money that goes into improving the country, improving roads and communication systems, providing health services for the poor and sick, etc. does more to create jobs than low taxes for the users of tax havens and shelters. The country boomed under the Eisenhower tax rates. More recently the economy boomed under the Clinton era tax rates. It has stagnated under the Bush era rates despite pumping millions into the pockets of the very wealthy "job creators". They are not job creators; they are money hoarders. The stock market has boomed over the past couple of years, but has that improved the income level of anyone who is not in upper management?

I am the proud wife of Joseph Brown Jr, guidance counselor at W.S. Thanks, Mrs. Brown, it's an honor and great pleasure to belong to a team as great as the one atRead More Sandel. It has always been one of my beliefs that early exposure is the key to so many valuable opportunties for children. At Sandel we are encouraged to give that chance to our students.
