Vincent Sheheen: South Carolina's Government Needs to Start Over

S.C. Sen. Vincent Sheheen said Thursday he believes state government should start over with a new constitutional convention.

One of the state's leading Democrats on Thursday called for South Carolina to basically start its government over from scratch.

Vincent Sheheen, a state senator who narrowly lost a 2010 gubernatorial election to Republican Gov. Nikki Halley, plans to file legislation to abolish the state Budget & Control Board, Secretary of State, and Comptroller General offices.

Today, in a legislative preview meeting in Columbia with members of the state press corps, he called for a constitutional convention.

He said starting the state's government over again would be the only way to "change culture" in South Carolina, according to the S.C. Radio Network.

South Carolina has had numerous problems in recent years in state government, including a disappearing governor who paid huge fines for using state dollars on his Argentian mistress, a lieutenant governor who stepped down after ethics violations, a ballot mess that knocked hundreds of would-be politicians off of ballots, and a hacking scandal that put millions of current and former South Carolina residents at risk of fraud, just to name a few.

Many believe Sheheen will challenge Haley next year for the governor's seat.

What do you think? Is South Carolina's government so bad it needs to just start over?

Sheheen; just posturing again; Haley has already said she wants most of what he said; just like his dad, career politician.

I'm disillusioned with Nikki Haley but given his voting record, I'm not sure I could support him either. http://votesmart.org/candidate/key-votes/48221/vincent-sheheen

Brilliant comment; think you'll pass the 3rd grade this year.

Jay: why do you say that Sheheen's dad is a career politician? You must be thinking of someone else - his uncle Bob maybe?

Give me a break Are you happy with Haley ? NOT ! What a mess our state government is in. Bring back Mark Sanford what a gem he was. .Wake up SC we need a drastic change and we will get it..Do we need to have more educated people from outside to make changes, I do not think so, we just need the great people here to rethink their politics. Do not settle for less...poor schools, no ethics in SC government, lousy hazardous school buses, 2nd in violence against women , security breach that will last for years to come,. We are on the bottom of every list and why do we accept that! Is it compliance or stupidity ? Either one is unacceptable. Keep those Good Old Boys in Office and this is what you get....What you deserve !! By the way my car is so out of alignment, as I think I hit every pot hole on Wade Hampton Blvd.. Do we have a representative.? Where is she or he? Where is the discuss. Liberal or Conservative where is our money to fix these things. We have paid and now we want to know why you SC have not anti-uped............. .
