Winthrop Poll: Gingrich Dominates GOP Field in SC

The most-recent survey from Winthrop University finds the former House Speaker way out in front.

The beat goes on for new South Carolina GOP frontrunner Newt Gingrich.

The former House Speaker garnered more than 38 percent of the votes in a recent Winthrop University poll released Tuesday morning. Former Gov. Mitt Romney came in second with 21.5 percent. Gov. Rick Perry, came in third with 9 percent.

Gingrich was polling at just 5.3 percent in the September poll.

The December 2011 Winthrop Poll was conducted between Dec. 27 and Dec. 4, interviewing 1,073 registered voters about the GOP primary, Barack Obama, the economy and other factors.
