SC Senate Rejects Medicaid Expansion

Vote was largely along party lines.

On Tuesday, the South Carolina Senate rejected the expansion of Medicaid in the state. The vote was 23-19, mostly along party lines. The only two Republicans who voted in favor of the expansion were Ray Cleary and Paul Campbell of Georgetown and Berkeley Counties, respectively. Cleary is a dentist. Senators debated for approximately three hours, in spirited fashion at times. Democrats, as they had done earlier this session, called for a temporary expansion of Medicaid, allowing it for a year at no cost to taxpayers, with no guarantee that would continue. But Republicans said that kind of uncertainty would not be good for a recovering state economy. The debate became the most heated when Democrats suggested that those who were voting …

Red Cross Holding Disaster Volunteer Training After Oklahoma Twisters

Palmetto Region disaster responders have deployed to the Red Cross' Washington HQ to help coordinate relief efforts in Oklahoma in the wake of recent tornadoes and is holding training sessions for those who want to become disaster responders

In the wake of Monday's devastating tornadoes in Oklahoma at least two Palmetto SC Region Red Cross disaster responders have deployed to the charity's Washington D.C. office to help coordinate relief efforts. More are expected to deploy in the coming days. "This has been a major disaster, and the Red Cross will be there for the people in this state and this community for weeks and months to come," said Louise Welch Williams, regional chief executive officer for American Red Cross Palmetto SC Region, said in a press release. "If you can help, we encourage you to make a financial donation today or become a local volunteer to help respond to future disasters." Mignon Clyburn, Daughter of Rep. Jim Clyburn, Named Acting Chair of FCC

She makes history in the process.

Mignon L. Clyburn, daughter of Rep. James Clyburn, became acting chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Monday. In ascending to the position, Clyburn becomes the first female to head the organization. Her interim tenure will end when Tom Wheeler, who was appointed by President Obama, is confirmed by Congress. That process is expected to take several months. In her first public appearance at a trade show in Las Vegas, Clyburn said the FCC has a had a, “light regulatory touch, but have touched when necessary."  Clyburn is serving her second term on the FCC, where she began in August 2009. Update: Several Downtown Columbia Roads Reopen After Flooding

Motorists should find an alternate route around downtown Columbia after heavy rain and flooding closed several roads.

Update, 7:03 p.m.: The following roads have reopened for traffic: Main at Waverly streets are still closed to traffic, Columbia Police said.  Original story, 4:43 p.m.: The stormy weather has caused flooding on several streets in downtown Columbia. Elementary School Student Asks Nikki Haley About Husband's Return

The youngster was on a field trip from New Providence Elementary School.

3 Ways to Help Oklahoma Tornado Victims

People across the country are wondering what they can do to help.

After a devatasting tornado struck the town of Moore, OK, on Monday, many Midlands residents are asking what they can do to help. First, you can text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10, according to this NBC report.  You can also text STORM to 80888 to donate $10 to the Salvation Army relief efforts.  The Oklahoma Baptist Disaster Relief is taking donations online and via phone. A Lowcountry man is seeking to rewind technology for voting and return to paper ballots, the Charleston City Paper reported. Frank Heindel of Mount Pleasant spoke to Charleston County Board of Elections and Voter Registration May 15 about his concerns. "I believe every citizen in Charleston County deserves an election process that is transparent, conforms to existing laws, and can produce an audit paper trail," Heindel said. It should definitely be done; at least provide voters with a paper version of their vote to individually verify and leave a paper trail for verification. Deputies Search for Kidnapping, Laptop Theft Suspects

A man was assaulted and kidnapped at a Broad River Road business Monday night.

Richland County deputies are looking for two men who assaulted another man, tied him up and forced him to tell them where computers were stored. The incident happened around 9:30 p.m. Monday at a business at 3005 Broad River Road, which is near St. Andrews Road, said Curtis Wilson, spokesperson for the Richland County Sheriff's Department. The men took three laptops and some tablets, Wilson said. They also took some of the victim's personal items. The two men will be charged with burglary, kidnapping and aggravated assalut, Wilson said. Anyone with information about the incident should call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
