Nathan R. Yon, 39, of Newberry, was set to lead the SC Science Academy scheduled to open in August in the former Parisian store in Richland Mall on Forest Drive.
The executive director of the South Carolina Science Academy was one of two men who died after a head-on collision on Interstate 26 Wednesday night. Nathan R. Yon, 39, of Newberry, was traveling west on I-26 in a 1989 Toyota pickup when he was struck by a 2004 GMC pickup traveling east in the westbound lane. Yon began work with the public charter school in 2011, assisting with the charter writing process and leading the academy's charter committee through the planning process and implementation of the school, according to its website. James Daniel Cooper III was found by coworkers on Monday at his home.
A member of the Richland County public defender's office was found dead on Monday morning by coworkers, according to a report in The State. An investigation continues into James Daniel Cooper III's death. Cooper, 32, has been working in the office for five years. He is a graduate of Richland Northeast High School. A memorial service will be held from 6 to 8 Thursday night at Kornegay & Moseley Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday and Elmwood Cemetery & Gardens. Family members say Inez "Renee" Baker was a hard-working, family-oriented woman.
Inez "Renee" Baker, the civilian contractor and Army veteran from Cayce who was killed Friday during an attack at a U.S. military base in Afghanistan, is described by her family as a woman of faith who was proud to be a soldier, according to reports. “She loved being a soldier,” her youngest son Andre Odom told The State newspaper. “She was proud of being a soldier.” The attack happened when three men wearing Afghan military uniforms forced their way onto the base and opened fire, according to the Associated Press. Scott, who served on the board for more than 12 years, passed away this week.
Richland One school board member Barbara Scott died Tuesday, according to a news release from the school district. Scott was first elected to the board in 1974, and she served for eight years, including three years as board chairwoman. In 2008, after 24 years as Richland County Clerk of Court, Scott successfully ran for election to an at-large seat on the board. She was re-elected to serve another four-year term in November 2012. On Sunday morning, Sen. Lindsey Graham told host Bob Schieffer of CBS' "Face the Nation" that he would not vote on John Brennan's nomination to head the CIA until he received more information from the White House on the Benghazi attacks. Graham said, he and Sen. John McCain, who joined him on the program, were "hell-bent" on finding out what happened on September 11, 2012 at the US Consulate in Libya. An attack that day led to four Americans being killed, including Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens. During the program, a clip was shown of Graham on the Senate floor saying that the sequester was "low point in my term in the United States Congress." Rick Stilwell, the local social media mogul, died Friday in his Mini Cooper.
Rick Stilwell, 44, died in his car Friday. The coroner stated he died from "natural causes." Read the full story HERE. His Twitter followers expressed condolences using the hashtag #livelikerick. A Tweetup was organized for his followers at the Jamestown Coffee Company. A site has also been set up to raise money for the Stillwell family HERE. Stilwell's wife, Vicki Stilwell, tweeted that the memorial service would be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Baptist Church in Cayce.

Temukisa "Kisa" Enele worked at the Northeast Columbia Walmart. You can express sympathies in a notebook in the front of the store.
The Walmart on Two Notch Road has made a memorial for one of their employees, Temukisa Enele, who was killed last week. Enele was found dead in a plastic container in the back of her boyfriend's car. Enele's memorial service was held Sunday at the Kornegay and Moseley Funeral Home.
