Military Suicides At Record High Since 9/11

More than 300 committed suicide and experts are saying the trend could grow worse.

Almost 350 members of the U.S. military committed suicide in 2012, the Associated Press reports. And it could get worse. Experts are predicting that the strains on the military personnel will lead to an "epidemic" of suicides, the AP reports. Read the full story HERE. In 2011, there were only 301 suicides. USA Today reports that there were 310 casualties in Afghanistan in 2012, making the number of suicides higher than the number of deaths overseas. So, what is causing this? In the first half of the year, Time reported that soldiers were committing suicide at a rate of one-per-day--a record that remained consistent throughout the year. Time also reported that this was the highest suicide toll since 9/11. NBCNews reports that the cause …

NASA: World Won't End on Dec. 21, 2012

Doomsday talk is starting back, but NASA says the Mayans were off.

Does the talk of Dec. 21 give you chills? Do you believe that the Mayan calendar predicts our demise today?  NASA scientists aren't worried.  According to the NASA website, the only thing that will happen on Dec. 21 is the winter solstice.  The website also compared the lack of dates on the Mayan calendar to the lack of dates on current calendars. "Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar." Of course, those screaming doomsday are getting far more attention…

Former Congressman Napier Endorses 'Bold' Gingrich

Gingrich campaign releases new ad painting stark contrast against Romney.

The Newt Gingrich campaign simultaneously announced Thursday an endorsement from former Congressman John Napier, who joins the campaign as South Carolina's co-chair, and released a new ad titled "Timid vs. Bold" — a jab at the candidate's GOP presidential rival Mitt Romney. Napier, who was not reelected in 1983, served as chair of the Reagan-Bush campaign in South Carolina in 1984, in addition to being the co-chair of Gov. Carroll Campbell's reelection campaign. "I've studied all the candidates in the race and Newt Gingrich is the right one for the job. I participated first-hand with Newt as he was an up and coming leader in the Congress and personally attest to the strong leadership part he played in crafting and passing the Reagan …

Perry Misspeaks on Candidacy Age

Presidential hopeful Rick Perry meets Greenville boy with aspirations to become president.

Add a new gaffe to GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry's list: The age of candidacy to run for president is 21. The Texas governor quickly corrected his mistake, saying that the age is 35. Perry was speaking to "future President" Catcher Jones, 7, of Greenville Thursday during an event in Mount Pleasant.  "I'm glad you're not 21," Perry said, crouching down to Catcher and then eyeing the group around him. "Or actually 35." Perry recently came under fire for saying the legal voting age was 21 in New Hampshire, according to the Huffington Post.  But Catcher didn't catch Perry's gaffe. He was just excited to meet the governor, who he called "fine."  Catcher wore a shirt that read "Future President: Accepting Campaign Donations Now."  Why …

Whom Should Tim Scott Endorse?

Congressman seeks voter input into the GOP field via 'South Carolina straw poll.'

After hosting six town halls with GOP nominee hopefuls, Congressman Tim Scott, R-SC, is asking South Carolina voters for help in making his possible endorsement. To participate, go to www.timstownhalls.com. Request for voters to participate in the informal poll began earlier this week with ads that only ran for a few days. On Monday, Scott hosted former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.  "Throughout this process, thousands of South Carolina voters have attended our forums, submitted questions for the candidates, and displayed a unity and passion to defeat President Obama that encourages me about the future of our country," Scott said in a statement released Thursday.  Scott called the solicited input a "South Carolina straw poll" and also asked…

Congressman Scott should endorse the candidate he believes who will act in the best interest of the American people. Unless the Republicans stop insisting that their candidate must conform to all the conservative, ultra-right-wing beliefs, their chances of winning will be diminished. Please, stop acting like school children. That is what our current representatives and the president has been …   more ›

SC Voters 'Rethink' Persuasive Gingrich

GOP voters in Palmetto State warm to the former House Speaker.

Persuasive — that's how many South Carolina voters describe GOP presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich.  "I think that's an understatement," Ed Bennett of West Ashley said Monday, after attending a Charleston town hall featuring Gingrich. While Gingrich has stances on several issues that didn't already jibe with Bennett's beliefs, the White House hopeful was able to explain away many of the differences. Bennett called this "more of a learning process." Gingrich, who was put in the "left for dead" category in the crowded Republican Party field just two months ago, is soaring in the polls both nationally and locally. A poll conducted Monday by InsiderAdvantage for the Augusta Chronicle showed Gingrich holding a dominanting lead for the Jan. 21 …

Two New Polls: Gingrich Running Away from SC Field (Updated)

Newt Gingrich out-polls the rest of the Republican field in the Palmetto State; Ron Paul ahead of Rick Perry.

Newt Gingrich has surged past Republican presidential contenders, with at least one-third of those surveyed over the week supporting the former House Speaker, according to two new polls released today. Gingrich garnered support of 38 percent in the most-recent Insider Advantage poll of South Carolina Republicans conducted Monday evening for the Augusta Chronicle. The former House Speaker, according to the poll of 519 likely Jan. 21 primary voters, has a commanding lead over former Gov. Mitt Romney at 15 percent and businessman Herman Cain at 13 percent. No other candidate has support in the double-digits, as Rep. Ron Paul polled at 7 percent, Gov. Rick Perry at 4 percent, Rep. Michele Bachmann at 3 percent and former Sen. Rick Santorum at …

Poll: Representative Proposes Statewide Education Millage

Rep. Jenny Horne said an equal, statewide millage rate would replace county education millage rates.

Rep. Jenny Horne said a statewide education millage rate versus a county-set millage rate may be coming and it would decrease the current millage in many districts. Horne spoke at the Holiday Inn Express in Summerville as part of the Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce legislative luncheon Thursday.  She said a statewide millage rate, based on per pupil spending, would likely be decreased for many districts around the state. She cited higher millage rates in under performing districts, and lower millage rates in better districts. Click here to view school millage rates throughout the state.

S.C.'s Tea Party Support Steeped in Political Tradition

Strongly identifying with the tea party, South Carolina will likely add its own flavor to the primary brew in January.

While the tea party movement has swept the nation in recent years, and has led to concerns that it's just a fading fad, the principles behind the group have been a major part of S.C. politics for years. Nearly all of the 2012 GOP presidential contenders have been featured across the state in town hall forums — a hallmark of the tea party — bringing the candidate to the floor where potential voters can interact with them.  In a state known for its sweet tea, this isn't a new flavor for its political identity, like it may be for the rest of the nation. "I would argue that the tea party really encapsulates a lot of the South Carolina ideology that existed already," said Kendra Stewart, a professor at the College of Charleston. "It has bubbled…

Perry Campaigner: 'Make People Be Fair to Us'

Katon Dawson speaks at Summerville senator's event, refuting immigration attacks on GOP nominee hopeful and defending Anita Perry's religious statements.

SUMMERVILLE — S.C. Director of Rick Perry for President Katon Dawson is seeking endorsements — not only from Gov. Nikki Haley, who he said he asks daily and shared a stage with Saturday during a breakfast for Sen. Mike Rose (R-Summerville), but also from the people of South Carolina.  But that takes some clarifying of Texas Gov. Rick Perry and his wife's message, which has recently been lampooned in the national media — specifically Perry's stance on immigration and religious views. Anita Perry visited South Carolina, including conservative Bob Jones University, this week.  "We've got to make people be fair to us — they're not going to be," Dawson said Saturday. Perry has been endorsed by many state legislators, including Rose.  Watch …
