Lady Capitals Lose State Championship Title

Columbia High women's basketball team started strong but ended up losing to Bishop England 43-41.

Despite leading throughout the whole game, the Columbia High lady Capitals came short of winning the state championship title as they fell behind in the last couple minutes of play.  The Capitals had the 41-40 lead towards the end of the fourth quarter but were not able to score any points after that.  Bishop England took the 42-41 lead with a little more than one minute left on the clock, and ended up winning 43-41. It is the first time the lady Battling Bishops won the state championship and the first time in history that a team won undefeated. They finished the season with a 28-0 record.  Columbia High, on the other hand, has won four state championships in the past, and this was the ninth time they've reached the finals. They finished …

Update: Bus to Take Fans to Columbia High Basketball Game

The Columbia High girls basketball team will play for the Upper State title Saturday.

Update, 12:11 p.m. Friday: Thirty people must sign up to ride on the bus by 3 p.m. Friday. If not, the bus will be cancelled.  Original story, Thursday: A bus will take fans to the Columbia High girls basketball game in Greenville Saturday. The team is playing for the Upper State title against Keenan High School at 2 p.m. at the Bi-Lo Center. The bus will leave from Columbia High School between 10:30 and 11 a.m. Saturday. The cost for a seat on the bus is $10. Admission to the game is also $10. Tickets can be purchased at the door or from Coach Larry Kearse at Columbia High School.  Food can also be purchased at the game. The bus will stop in Clinton on the way back to eat at a seafood restaurant with the team.  Anyone who wants to ride on…

Update: Capitals to Play for Upper State Title

The Columbia High girls basketball team will face Keenan High Saturday.

Update, Feb. 22: The Columbia High women's basketball team will play for the Upper State title Saturday at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville.  The Capitals will face Keenan High School at 2 p.m. Saturday. If they win, they'll play in the state championship on March 3.  The women's team beat Cheraw High School 37-32 in the quarterfinals Tuesday in Cheraw.    Original story, Feb. 20: The Columbia High women's basketball team moves on to the quarterfinals Tuesday.  The Capitals will face Cheraw High School at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Cheraw.  The team beat Saluda High School 47-30 in Friday's game.  If they win Tuesday, they play in the semifinals Saturday. 

Columbia High Senior Picked for All-Star Wrestling Team

The best high school wrestlers from across the state are chosen to participate.

Columbia High senior Nate Harper was one of about 50 wrestlers from across the state selected to participate in the 2012 Best Western North/South All-Star Wrestling Classic.  Harper will wrestle for the 3A/2A North team under coaches David Spencer from York and Jon Rentz from Chesnee.  The 24th annual event will take place on March 1-3 at North Myrtle Beach High School.  The event is organized by the South Carolina Wrestling Coaches Association.

Update: Columbia High Capitals Beat Yellow Jackets

The girls varsity basketball team beat Buford High School, and will move on to the second round of the playoffs.

Update, Feb. 15: The Columbia High girls basketball team won 52-22 in the first round of the South Carolina 2A tournament against Buford High School Tuesday.  The Captials will take on the Saluda High School Tigers at 7 p.m. Friday.    Original story: The Columbia High girls basketball team begins its playoff run Tuesday during the South Carolina 2A tournament.  The second-ranked Capitals (17-4) will host Buford High School at 6 p.m. Tuesday.  Last week, the Capitals won the Region 3-2A championship with a score of 40-32 against Keenan High School.

National Signing Day 2012: Three Columbia High Players Commit

Wide receiver Casey Gladney signed with Texas Tech. Two other players signed with a military prep school.

Three Columbia High football players signed with schools Wednesday.  Casey Gladney signed with Texas Tech.  KyNicholas Tyler signed with Hargrave Military Academy. Justin Muller also signed with Hargrave Military Academy.

The linebacker will attend the prep school before being recruited by other colleges.

Columbia High football player Justin Muller signed with Hargrave Military Academy Wednesday.  Muller will spend one semester at the prep school in Virginia, Coach Kemper Amick said. He'll then be recruited by other colleges.  Muller, a linebacker, had 94 tackles, including three sacks, and five interceptions this season. He scored seven touchdowns on offense.  Muller's mother, Shunte McLemore, and brother, Carnell Muller, were at the announcement in the school's media center to support him.

Columbia High Beats Carolina Academy, Moves on to Semifinals

The Capitals will play Central High School next Friday.

The Columbia High Capitals defeated the Trojans 29-27 in the third round of the playoffs Friday night.  They'll move on to the semifinals next Friday to face Central High School. Last week, the Capitals beat Lee Central in their second-round playoff game.  Columbia High is ranked 51 in the state and eight in Division AA, according to maxpreps.com.

Update: Capitals Beat Stallions, Advance to Quarterfinals

Columbia High will play Carolina High School & Academy next Friday.

The Columbia High Capitals defeated the Lee Central Stallions 68-43 in the second round of the playoffs Friday night.  The Capitals will move on to the quarterfinals of the S.C. High School League Class AA Division II Football next Friday. They'll face Carolina High School & Academy who beat Mid-Carolina 10-7 in their second-round playoff game.  The Capitals are ranked number 55 in the state and number eight in Division AA, according to maxpreps.com. Their record for the season is 9-2-0.
