Legendary Racer "Cotton" Owens Dies at 88

Owens had just been named to the 2013 class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

An Upstate NASCAR legend died Thursday after a long battle with cancer. Everett "Cotton" Owens of Spartanburg, who had just been named to the 2013 class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in May, died at the age of 88. Owens is one of 20 men who have been named to the Hall of Fame, which was started in 2010. According to the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, Owens, a native of Union, S.C., won races, built winning race cars and ran championship teams in a career spanning more than three decades. "He was always an honest, hard-working individual, and everybody always saw him as that," Owens' grandson Brandon Davis said at the Hall of Fame ceremony last month.
