Expert: Prevention Key to Avoiding Lyme Disease

Lowering exposure to blacklegged or deer ticks that carry the disease is one sure-fire way of not becoming infected.

A change in clothing, some bug spray and avoiding wooded areas are some preventative measures one can take to avoid being bitten by a tick that could be carrying Lyme disease, an expert at the University of South Carolina said Thursday. Mark M. Macauda, research associate in the Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior at USC’s Arnold School of Public Health, said the key to preventing Lyme disease –- a disease that has recently come to the forefront after Rep. Joe Wilson contracted it, according to staff -– is to eliminate or reduce exposure to areas where deer ticks could bite you. “Really the only way to get Lyme disease is to be bitten by a deer tick. Don't look to the CDC or IDSA for correct info. This is a political disease and a fight is going on for correct info and treatment. Currently, patients are losing because misinformation abounds and insurance companies are denying treatment based on IDSA guidelines which are incorrect. UPDATE: Wilson Remains Hospitalized for Viral-Type Infection

The Midlands Congressman is expected to make a full recovery

Congressman Joe Wilson remains in a Midlands hospital Thursday with a viral-type infection. Wilson is currently receiving treatment at Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, Wilson's Chief of Staff Eric Dell said. "While the exact infectious agent has not yet been defined, there is no evidence of serious complication and complete recovery is expected," Dell said. Wilson was hospitalized on Tuesday and the illness may be related to a tick bite. Last week, Wilson's office said he was being treated for Lyme disease. A spokeswoman for Lexington Medical Center said there is no patient listed under the name of Joe Wilson or Addison Wilson, the congressman's full name. He may be listed privately, she said. S.C. Rep. Joe Wilson Contracts Lyme Disease

Recovery Expected as The Second District Congressman Plans District Tour Next Week

S.C. Rep. Joe Wilson has contracted Lyme disease, his office confirmed Thursday. "Congressman Wilson recently contracted an illness while working in his yard," said an official statement from his Washington office. "Currently, he is taking antibiotics to treat symptoms of Lyme Disease. His condition is not contagious. He is looking forward to a speedy recovery and beginning his annual District tour of the Second Congressional District of South Carolina on Monday." Lyme disease is a tick-borne disease that can be serious if left untreated, but can be eliminated if spotted early and treated with antibiotics. I am a native Charlestonian and contracted Lyme Disease while camping in Myrtle Beach State Park in April 2010. I have a positive western blot test and STILL was left untreated by 2 infectious disease docs, 1 internist, and 1 rheumatologist in Charleston.
