2 Richland One Seniors Awarded National Merit Scholarships

An A.C. Flora High student and a Dreher High student each won the prestigious scholarship.

Two Richland One students are among the 32 South Carolina high school seniors who won highly prestigious National Merit Scholarships. A.C. Flora High School senior Gray M. Williams and Dreher High School senior Alessandra M. Tuel will each receive a $2,500 scholarship. Gray plans to pursue a degree in mathematics, while Alessandra hopes to have a career in mechanical engineering. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and college scholarships. A.C. Flora Student Impresses Judges at 'Best Singer in the State' Competition

John Harmon Cooper was one of six students in the state to compete for the title of "Best Singer."

The rich, soulful voice of A.C. Flora High School student John Harmon Cooper impressed the judges at the 2013 Best Singer in the State competition, which was held at the Fine Arts Center in Greenville on April 26. As the winner of Richland One’s Best Singer in the District competition, John qualified to be one of six students to participate in the state competition. Although he did not win the state contest, John gave an excellent performance. He sang two songs – “Lean on Me” in the first round and “Make You Feel My Love” in the second round. The goal of the Best Singer in the District competition is toidentify, encourage, motivate, promote and reward vocal music developmentand excellence within South Carolina school districts. Dreher High Seniors Present Showcase of Plays

The showcase features half-hour plays directed by seniors.

Do you enjoy a play that makes you laugh? Or maybe your heart is moved to tears by a stirring drama? How about a production that features a different play every half hour? Dreher High School’s 13th annual senior-directed showcase of one-act plays, which will be presented April 24-26, may be just what you’re looking for. The “Showcase of Senior Shorts” is an annual theatre tradition featuring the talents of Dreher’s finest actors, technicians and singers. A.C. Flora, Dreher Among Nation's 'Most Challenging' High Schools

A.C. Flora High is ranked 452 and Dreher High is ranked 1,128 out of the nearly 30,000 schools nationwide.

A.C. Flora High and Dreher High are two of the nation's most challenging high schools, according to the Washington Post.  A.C. Flora was ranked 452 out of the nearly 30,000 schools nationwide, while Dreher High was ranked 1,128. The Washington Post rates schools using an index formula. They divide the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year by the number of seniors who graduated that year to come up with a ratio.  Three other schools in the Midlands made the list — two in Richland-Lexington District 5 and one in Richland Two. Only 14 schools in South Carolina made the list.  See the full list of most challenging schools.

Richland One Names April 'Teacher Feature' Honoree

Tabitha Boyd-Collins, a fifth-grade teacher at Bradley Elementary School, will be featured on Richland One TV.

The ability to combine “new-school” practices and “old-school” traditions is just one of the reasons Tabitha Boyd-Collins was selected as the Richland One "Teacher Feature" honoree for April. “Teacher Feature,” the district’s monthly segment that highlights outstanding educators on Richland One TV, is broadcast on Time Warner Cable channel 12.  Boyd-Collins, who is a National Board-certified teacher, teaches fifth grade at Bradley Elementary School. 2 Richland One Students Named National Achievement Scholarship Winners

The students will each receive a $2,500 scholarship.

Lindsey A. Hallingquest of Columbia High School and Eloisa J. Baez Jones of Dreher High School have been named winners in the prestigious and highly competitive 2013 National Achievement Scholarship Program. They are amongthe 800 seniors across the nation who have won college scholarships totaling more than $2 million. Each student will receive a $2,500 scholarship. The National Achievement Scholarship Program recognizes outstanding African-American high school seniors who are the highest scorers in their states on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Dreher High Senior Wins State Wrestling Title

The star athlete and student took home the Class 3A state wrestling championship.

Dreher High School senior Chris Bloch captured the 2013 Class 3A state wrestling championship in the 152-pound weight division. With 171 career wins, Chris broke the school’s career win record of 153. He is not only a star athlete but also a star student with a 4.4 GPA.

23 Richland One Schools Win Palmetto Gold, Silver Awards

These schools were recognized for high levels of academic achievement and high rates of improvement, as well as for their efforts to close the achievement gaps.

Twenty-three Richland One schools are recipients of the Palmetto Gold or Silver Awards, the S.C. Department of Education announced Monday.  The Palmetto Gold and Silver Awards program recognizes schools for high levels of academic achievement and high rates of improvement. It also rewards schools that are closing the achievement gaps between groups of students.  Overall, Richland One schools won 15 Palmetto Gold Awards and eight Palmetto Silver Awards for dramatically improving students’ performance in 2012. Update: Bus Wreck Sends 4 Children to Hospital

Their injuries were not life-threatening, The State newspaper reports.

Four Richland One students were taken to the hospital Monday afternoon after a wreck between a school bus and a truck, according to The State.  The truck rear-ended the bus when it was stopped at a railroad crossing near Veterans and Atlas roads, according to the report.  Read more from The State.

Tapp's Arts Center to Feature Richland One Student Artwork

A celebration kicking off the display will be held Saturday.

The colorful drawings and paintings of students from more than 20 Richland One schools will be on exhibit at the Tapp's Arts Center through the end of March. The center is hosting a celebration featuring the art of students from school districts in the Midlands in observance of National Youth Art Month. The celebration kicks off Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a free grand opening geared specifically for young artists, teachers, and parents.This kid-friendly event includes snacks and entertainment. Performances by Richland One schools will include "Hairspray" by students from A.C.
