Report: Columbia Police to Drop Charges Against SC NAACP Leader

State NAACP president Lonnie Randolph Jr. was charged on Friday after a dispute at a Columbia dry cleaners.

The Columbia Police Department may drop charges filed against the president of the South Carolina chapter of the nation's oldest civil rights organization.

According to a report from The State, interim Police Chief Ruben Santiago said the department will ask a judge to drop charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest against state NAACP president Lonnie Randolph Jr. due to medical reasons.

Randolph was charged on Friday after he was involved in a dispute with an employee at a Columbia dry cleaners for not paying his bill and refusing to leave the property, according to the report.

Randolph's attorney, Joe McColloch, released a statement Wednesday saying the incident was a result "of a cascade of misunderstandings and the individuals involved not recognizing the diabetic condition," according to a report from WIS-TV.
